Britam Confirms Celestine Munda as Board Chair After Seven Months as Interim Leader

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Britam Holdings Plc has appointed Celestine Munda as its substantive Board Chairperson, formalising her leadership of the insurer and investment group after more than six months in an interim role.

The appointment took effect on October 27, 2026, subject to regulatory approvals, according to a notice issued by the company.

Munda, an Independent Non-Executive Director, has served as interim chair since March 30, 2026. She brings more than 30 years of professional and leadership experience spanning professional services and the energy sector.

Her appointment comes as Britam pursues its ASCEND 2026–2030 Strategy, which the company says is aimed at creating sustainable, long-term value for shareholders, customers, employees and communities across its seven African markets.

From EY Kenya Leadership to Britam’s Boardroom

Munda is a former Senior Partner at Ernst & Young (EY), where she served as Country Managing Partner for Kenya and held regional and continental leadership positions.

Her previous roles include Consulting Services Managing Partner for East and Central Africa and Risk Advisory Services Leader for Africa. Her professional experience also includes work at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Royal Dutch Shell.

At Britam, Munda joined the board in September 2022 as an Independent Non-Executive Director. She has also chaired the group’s Board Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee, a role focused on oversight of financial reporting, internal controls and regulatory compliance.

Her wider board and public-interest roles include service on the boards of M-PESA Foundation, TradeMark Africa and Jaguar Petroleum Limited, among other engagements.

Accounting and Executive Leadership Background

Munda holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting (Honours) and is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya.

Her leadership training includes programmes at Harvard Business School and the Gordon Institute of Business Science at the University of Pretoria.

The combination of professional-services experience, governance oversight and board service forms part of the background she brings to Britam’s leadership as the group advances its next strategic plan.

Britam Looks Ahead to Its 2026–2030 Strategy

In its announcement, Britam said the board welcomed Munda’s appointment and looked forward to her continued leadership as it implements the ASCEND 2026–2030 Strategy.

The company operates across seven African markets, with businesses spanning insurance, asset management and related financial services.

The appointment formalises the leadership arrangement that began in March, when Munda was named interim chair following the death of former board chair Kuria Muchiru.
