African Union Chair Congratulates Senegal on AFCON 2025 Victory, Praises Morocco’s Hosting

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated the Republic of Senegal on its historic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory, describing the final as a memorable showcase of African football excellence.

In a statement, Youssouf hailed the showdown between Senegal and Morocco as a contest that reflected the “highest standards of African football, competitiveness, and continental pride.”

“AFCON has once again demonstrated that the beautiful game is a powerful force for unity, bringing Africans together across cultures, borders, and generations,” he said, commending all participating nations for showcasing the continent’s talent, resilience, and leadership in sport.

While acknowledging moments of tension inherent in high-level competition, the Chairperson noted that sportsmanship and fair play ultimately prevailed, reinforcing the shared values at the heart of African football.

He also praised Morocco for its successful hosting of the tournament. “The Commission extends profound appreciation to His Majesty the King, the Government, and the people of the Kingdom of Morocco for the gracious invitation and exemplary organization of the tournament,” Youssouf said.

He highlighted Morocco’s hospitality and professionalism as key factors in delivering a world-class sporting event that unites the continent and inspires global admiration.

The AU Chair concluded by wishing continued success to Senegal, Morocco, and all African teams, noting their role in carrying Africa’s pride and passion onto the global stage, including at this year’s FIFA World Cup.

The statement reflects the AU’s ongoing commitment to using sport as a platform for continental unity, youth engagement, and global recognition of African talent.
