Adhi’s appointment, effective from August 30, 2024, is set for a three-year term, marking a new era for the environmental oversight body.
The appointment of Adhi brings an end to the tenure of Fancy Too, whose position was officially revoked by Duale.
The NECC, established under Sections 31 to 36 of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act of 1999, serves as Kenya’s primary body for investigating public complaints or allegations concerning environmental conditions.
The committee is also empowered to proactively initiate investigations into suspected cases of environmental degradation, making it a critical player in safeguarding Kenya’s environmental health.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 31(1)(a) of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry appoints Godana Doyo Adhi to be the Chairperson of the National Environmental Complaints Committee,” read the official notice from Duale’s office.
Adhi, who previously served as the first Governor of Isiolo County, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
His leadership skills and commitment to public service are expected to drive the NECC’s mission of promoting environmental justice and sustainability.
