Fuel Prices Drop as EPRA Cuts Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene Rates in January Review

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Fuel prices have dropped across Kenya following the latest monthly review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), offering modest relief to motorists and households amid continued pressure on the cost of living.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 14, EPRA announced reductions in the pump prices of Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene, with the new rates set to remain in force for 30 days, from January 15 to February 14, 2026.

The regulator said the revised prices were determined in accordance with the Petroleum Act, 2019, and applicable subsidiary legislation.

“In accordance with Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019 and Legal Notice No.192 of 2022, we have calculated the maximum retail prices of petroleum products which will be in force from 15th January 2026 to 14th February 2026,” EPRA said.

Under the new pricing framework, Super Petrol has been reduced by Sh2.00 per litre, while Diesel and Kerosene have each dropped by Sh1.00 per litre.

In Nairobi, Super Petrol will now retail at Sh182.52 per litre, Diesel at Sh170.47, and Kerosene at Sh153.78, effective midnight Wednesday.

EPRA clarified that the prices already include all applicable taxes, as required under existing tax and finance laws.

“The prices are inclusive of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024, and the revised excise duty rates adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No.194 of 2020,” the authority said.

According to EPRA, the price cuts were driven by a decline in the average landed cost of imported petroleum products during the review period.

The landed cost of Super Petrol declined marginally by 0.10%, from US$592.84 per cubic metre in November 2025 to US$592.24 in December 2025. Diesel recorded a sharper drop of 4.20%, falling from US$654.24 to US$626.75 per cubic metre, while Kerosene saw the biggest decline of 8.92%, from US$667.05 to US$607.55 per cubic metre.

While the reductions are expected to ease transport and household energy costs, analysts note that fuel prices remain historically high due to global market volatility, exchange rate pressures, and Kenya’s tax structure.

The announcement comes just weeks after EPRA intensified enforcement against fuel adulteration, unveiling stations and transporters found selling substandard or illegally diverted petroleum products.

In a December 31 statement, EPRA said it conducted 4,394 tests at 967 petroleum sites between October and December 2025. Of these, 957 stations were compliant, while 10 failed to meet fuel quality standards.

Meridian Fuels Filling Station in Ngata, Nakuru, was found selling diesel adulterated with domestic kerosene but was later reopened after upgrading its product and paying taxes and penalties amounting to Sh140,144.

Akwabi Filling Station in Bukura, Kakamega County, was closed after being found selling adulterated diesel, while Eden Energy Service Station in Wote, Makueni County, was cited for selling diesel meant for export and fined Sh132,780 before reopening.

EPRA also impounded three fuel trucks in Taita Taveta and Mombasa, with the cases still pending in court. Additionally, diesel stored in high-sulphur jerrycans suspected to have been smuggled was seized from four sites in Moyale, Marsabit County.

The regulator said enforcement against fuel adulteration and illegal fuel trade remains a priority to protect consumers, safeguard engines, and preserve public revenue.
