Kenya Deepens Climate Collaboration with Germany in Tree-Growing and River Restoration Efforts

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale hosted German Ambassador Sebastian Groth on October 2, to explore new areas of cooperation between Kenya and Germany.

The discussions focused on expanding collaborative efforts to address climate change, particularly through Kenya’s ambitious 15 billion tree-growing initiative and the ongoing restoration of the Nairobi River ecosystem.

Germany remains one of Kenya’s key partners in climate action, supporting critical initiatives like the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), the third National Climate Change Action Plan (NCAP III), and its involvement in last year’s Africa Climate Summit.

The meeting further reviewed the progress of the 2022 Climate Development Partnership, which was formalized between the two nations at COP27 in Egypt.

One of the central themes of the discussions was Germany’s role in the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and its participation in a trilateral mangrove rehabilitation pilot project involving Kenya, Germany, and the UAE, aimed at boosting coastal ecosystems.

Cabinet Secretary Duale expressed Kenya’s commitment to driving impactful climate initiatives, particularly through grassroots programs like the “Climate Worx Mtaani” project, which is leading the restoration of the 47-kilometer Nairobi River stretch.

The meeting was also attended by George Tarus, Acting Forest Conservation Secretary, and Pacifica Ogolla, Director for Climate Change in the ministry, both of whom emphasized the importance of international partnerships in achieving Kenya’s climate goals.
