Kenya Defence Forces Tackles Housing Shortage with New Project in Laikipia County

Date:

LAIKIPIA, Kenya- In response to the housing crisis within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has commissioned the construction of 788 new housing units in the Kwa Mbuzi area of Laikipia County.

This project is part of a broader initiative to alleviate the acute housing deficit faced by KDF personnel.

The KDF currently grapples with a substantial shortfall, needing 33,400 married quarters and 25,800 single quarters.

Duale highlighted that the new housing units will substantially alleviate this deficit.

“The government is committed to providing suitable housing for our soldiers and their families,” he stated.

“Our goal is to ensure their comfort in terms of shelter, healthcare, and education for their children.”

Public-Private Partnership

This initiative is realized through a public-private partnership, showcasing the government’s innovative approach to addressing housing challenges.

The overall project encompasses 3,069 housing units distributed across five key regions: Nakuru (952 units), Gilgil (697 units), Mariakani (120 units), Nairobi (500 units), and Nanyuki (788 units).

This distribution aims to ensure that soldiers across various regions benefit from the new housing developments.

The housing project predominantly focuses on single quarters, with 2,089 units designated for individual soldiers.

However, the project also caters to families, offering 980 married quarters with two and three-bedroom units.
