NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya’s Nairobi Expressway, a game-changing infrastructure project built by a Chinese firm, has been nominated for the “Best Technological Innovation in Transport” category at the Afrika Mashariki Transport Awards 2024.
This marks the second consecutive year the expressway has received such recognition, continuing its legacy of revolutionizing urban transport in the region.
The operator of the expressway, Moja Expressway, made the announcement on Wednesday, urging Kenyans to vote for the project in the upcoming awards.
“Nairobi Expressway is up for Best Technological Innovation in Transport in the 2024 Afrika Mashariki Transport Awards, and we need your vote. Vote for us today and help us continue revolutionizing transport in Kenya,” the company said in a statement.
The Afrika Mashariki Transport Awards celebrate excellence in the transport sector across East Africa, bringing together private firms and government agencies to recognize innovation and sustainability.
In 2023, the expressway took home top honors in the categories of “Best Transportation Infrastructure” and “Sustainable Transport,” setting the bar for future nominations.
Since opening, the expressway has dramatically reduced travel times for Nairobi’s motorists and opened new opportunities for commuter buses.
Serving over 70,000 vehicles daily, it has eased congestion on some of the city’s most notorious traffic routes.
The expressway’s technological edge—such as cashless tolling and real-time traffic monitoring—has earned it a spot as a frontrunner in regional transport innovation .
