NAIROBI, Kenya — Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said the planned Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will significantly strengthen security operations and improve public order within the capital and its surrounding areas.
In a statement issued after receiving a progress report from the technical committee spearheading the formation of the Unit, Murkomen said the specialised policing outfit is expected to enhance the government’s response to emerging security threats in Nairobi Metropolitan.
“The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will significantly enhance security and public order in the city and its surroundings,” Murkomen said.
According to the Interior CS, the Unit will focus on strengthening coordination between security agencies, improving emergency response systems and deepening cooperation between the police service and members of the public.
Murkomen noted that the technical team involved in establishing the Unit is benchmarking against some of the world’s leading metropolitan police agencies to ensure the new outfit operates efficiently and professionally.
“I am gratified that the team is learning from some of the best metropolitan police units in the world in coming up with the administrative structure, service standing orders and standard operating procedures,” he stated.
The proposed Unit is expected to play a central role in addressing growing urban security concerns in Nairobi, including organised crime, violent protests, traffic-related security challenges and rapid emergency response within the metropolitan region.
The CS further emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration in ensuring effective security management within the capital, which remains Kenya’s economic and administrative hub.
The progress briefing was attended by National Government Coordination Principal Secretary Ahmed Abdisalan, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, representatives from the Nairobi County Government and other senior government officials.
The establishment of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit comes amid increasing focus by the government on modernising the country’s policing systems and improving security infrastructure in major urban centres.
Security reforms under the Ministry of Interior have recently focused on strengthening specialised police operations, improving police welfare and enhancing operational independence within the National Police Service.
