Absa, Visa Deepen Alliance to Power Africa’s Digital Finance Future

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya— Absa Bank has extended its collaboration with global payments giant Visa in a renewed push to accelerate financial innovation and digital access across the continent.

The new agreement, signed in Johannesburg, reinforces Absa’s commitment to transforming the digital payments landscape across its Regional Operations outside South Africa.

The extended partnership will focus on rolling out digital tools, strengthening financial inclusion for small businesses, and enhancing access to credit across key African markets.

Under the deal, Absa and Visa will work together to scale solutions such as card-to-card transfers, virtual card issuance, and specialized credit cards for businesses.

In 2025, Absa launched Visa Business Credit Cards, designed to give corporate customers greater control over expenditure and better financial oversight.

Visa Direct, a real-time card-to-card transfer service, has also been introduced in several Absa markets, further easing domestic and cross-border remittances.

The bank has additionally prioritized the rollout of digital wallets and premium Visa cards in countries such as Mauritius.

“This regional expansion marks an exciting new chapter in our partnership with Absa, one that continues to challenge conventions and redefine the possibilities within financial services,” said Michael Berner, Visa’s Head of Southern and East Africa.

“We share a strong commitment to growing digital access across the region. Absa’s leadership in innovation drives real impact, and we’re proud to support their momentum with Visa’s global expertise and technology as they deliver seamless experiences to their customers,” he added.

The renewed pact comes amid a continent-wide push by banks and fintech firms to bridge financial gaps, especially among underserved populations and SMEs. By tapping Visa’s global network and Absa’s local presence, the partnership is expected to significantly boost digital payment adoption in emerging markets.
