Sidian Bank, KIE Partner to Address Sh4tn MSME Funding Gap

NAIROBI, Kenya — Sidian Bank has partnered with Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) to expand access to affordable credit and business-development support for micro, small and medium enterprises involved in manufacturing and value addition.

The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding on September 10 at the State Department for MSMEs Development offices in Nairobi.

The partnership will target barriers affecting the growth of small businesses, including limited access to suitable financing, inadequate business skills and difficulties reaching markets.

Under the agreement, Sidian Bank and KIE will collaborate on MSME training, capacity building, customer referrals and the provision of blended and graduated financing.

Businesses will also be assisted in accessing larger credit facilities as they expand and demonstrate the ability to manage additional financing.

MSMEs Development Principal Secretary Susan Mang’eni said Kenyan small businesses have an estimated financing demand of Sh4 trillion.

She said the partnership was among the interventions intended to make affordable financing available to enterprises when they need it.

“MSMEs account for a significant share of economic activity and job creation in our country,” Mang’eni said.

“If we can strengthen credit inclusion and ensure that businesses have access to financing that is appropriate to their needs, we can create the conditions for them to grow and, in turn, drive broader economic development.”

The Principal Secretary called on lenders and enterprise-support institutions to abandon uniform financing models and design products based on the different needs and growth stages of individual businesses.

“We must move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and develop solutions that respond to the realities of MSMEs,” she said.

Support Beyond Loans

Sidian Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer John Okulo said the lender would offer businesses more than access to capital.

“Our role is not simply to provide financing. It is to understand the businesses we serve and develop financial solutions that respond to their needs, their stage of growth and the changing market environment,” Okulo said.

He said the partnership would combine financing with business support and market linkages to help enterprises move from survival to sustainable growth.

“We want to make finance a catalyst for enterprise development rather than simply a source of capital,” he added.

KIE Managing Director Nelson Kwamini said combining financial and non-financial assistance would enable the institutions to support MSMEs throughout their growth journey.

“Our collaboration with Sidian Bank will enable us to strengthen the support we provide to MSMEs by combining access to finance with capacity building, training and business development,” Kwamini said.

KIE is a government enterprise-development institution that supports businesses involved in manufacturing and value addition.

Kwamini said the partnership would create more opportunities for Kenyan enterprises to become sustainable, resilient and competitive.

The agreement will establish pathways for participating businesses to improve their operations, access suitable credit as they expand and connect with wider market opportunities.
