SUN Mobility, Vivo Energy Launch Battery-Swapping Network for Electric Vehicles in Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya — Indian electric vehicle infrastructure company SUN Mobility has launched a battery-swapping network in Kenya in partnership with Vivo Energy, marking its first African market as it targets an expansion that could transform how electric motorcycles, tuk-tuks and other commercial vehicles are powered.

The companies currently have 35 battery-swapping stations operating in Nairobi and Mombasa, providing electric mobility users with an alternative to conventional charging.

The rollout is designed around a shared, manufacturer-agnostic network that allows riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones instead of waiting for their vehicles to recharge.

The model is particularly targeted at high-mileage commercial operators, including electric motorcycle and three-wheeler users whose earnings depend on keeping their vehicles on the road.

“We are giving riders greater choice, fleet operators more flexibility and financiers greater confidence that the vehicles they finance will remain supported by a reliable, independently operated battery-swapping network,” said Ajay Goel, SUN Mobility’s Co-Founder and CEO, International Business.

“Kenya is just the beginning of our long-term vision to build Africa’s largest universal battery swapping network for electric mobility,” he added.

Network to support multiple EV brands

Unlike proprietary charging systems that can lock users into a particular vehicle manufacturer, SUN Mobility’s network is designed to support electric vehicles from different manufacturers.

The Kenyan network will initially serve electric motorcycles, scooters, passenger tuk-tuks and cargo three-wheelers.

More than 10 vehicle manufacturers are participating in the initial rollout, including Afrina Neopower, BGauss, Fika Mobility, Motovolt, Odysse, Piaggio, QJ-YY, Sprocomm, VMoto and Wylex.

Their vehicles are expected to enter the Kenyan market in the coming weeks.

The multi-brand approach is significant for Kenya’s emerging electric mobility sector, where manufacturers have increasingly introduced different vehicle models and battery technologies.

A fragmented market can make charging infrastructure expensive and difficult to scale if every manufacturer requires a separate network.

SUN Mobility is instead positioning its batteries and swapping stations as shared infrastructure that can be used by multiple vehicle manufacturers.

Battery swapping could cut operating costs

SUN Mobility says its technology can reduce running costs by 20 per cent compared with petrol vehicles for users travelling approximately 100 kilometres a day.

The savings could rise to 35 per cent for riders travelling about 150 kilometres daily, according to the company.

The economics could make battery swapping particularly attractive to commercial riders, delivery operators and other businesses that cover long distances every day.

Unlike conventional charging, which can take a vehicle out of service while the battery is replenished, swapping allows a depleted battery to be exchanged for a charged one.

This can potentially reduce vehicle downtime and allow commercial operators to spend more time generating revenue.

Vivo Energy to integrate swapping into fuel-station network

The partnership also gives SUN Mobility access to Vivo Energy’s extensive African distribution network.

Vivo Energy operates Shell and Engen-branded fuel stations across the continent and plans to extend the partnership beyond Kenya.

The company has a footprint of more than 4,200 service stations across 29 African countries.

The planned expansion could see selected conventional fuel stations incorporate electric vehicle charging and battery-swapping services.

For Vivo Energy, the strategy provides a way to participate in the transition towards electric mobility while making use of existing service-station locations and customer traffic.

“SUN Mobility’s model aligns closely with our Shell service station network,” said Hans Paulsen, EVP East & South – Africa at Vivo Energy.

He said the open-architecture approach could allow different electric vehicle manufacturers and vehicle categories to use a common battery-swapping network, similar to how conventional fuel stations serve vehicles from multiple manufacturers.

SUN Mobility targets 160,000 African vehicles

SUN Mobility is targeting more than 160,000 vehicles and 2,500 battery-swapping stations across Africa within five years.

Kenya will therefore serve as an important test market for the company’s African expansion.

The company will have to demonstrate that its shared infrastructure model can scale across markets with different vehicle fleets, regulatory environments, electricity systems and consumer needs.

SUN Mobility already has a significantly larger operation in India.

Its Indian network covers 25 cities and more than 125,000 vehicles through over 2,000 stations.

The company says vehicles on its Indian network have completed more than 70 million battery swaps and travelled approximately 2 billion kilometres.

Why Kenya is an important EV market

Kenya has emerged as one of Africa’s more active markets for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, with electric motorcycles increasingly being positioned as an alternative to petrol-powered boda bodas.

For commercial riders, however, charging time and battery availability remain important considerations.

Battery swapping seeks to address both challenges by separating the vehicle from the battery.

Instead of waiting for a battery to charge, a rider can exchange it at a designated station and continue the journey with a charged unit.

The approach also allows the infrastructure operator to manage charging centrally, potentially enabling batteries to be charged during periods when electricity is more readily available.

Existing fuel stations provide expansion advantage

SUN Mobility’s partnership with Vivo Energy could give the company a major physical advantage as it expands.

Building a completely new network of thousands of battery-swapping stations would require significant investment in land, construction and customer acquisition.

Using existing fuel stations provides locations that commercial drivers already know and visit.

The strategy could also gradually transform traditional fuel stations into multi-energy mobility hubs as electric vehicle adoption increases.

For Vivo Energy, the transition offers an opportunity to add new mobility services while retaining its established network of forecourts.

Battery compatibility remains critical

The success of the model will depend heavily on compatibility.

Battery swapping only becomes commercially attractive when there are enough vehicles using a particular network to keep stations busy.

If manufacturers use incompatible batteries or proprietary systems, individual networks can struggle to achieve the scale required to justify widespread infrastructure investment.

SUN Mobility’s open-architecture model is therefore aimed at creating a common infrastructure layer across manufacturers.

The company has spent nine years developing its technology, which combines interchangeable batteries, swapping stations and software for battery monitoring, customer management and maintenance.

The Kenyan launch represents the next stage of that strategy as the company attempts to establish a universal battery-swapping network across Africa.
