How a Tanzania Arrest Led Kenyan Police to 454kg Narcotics Haul in Kwale

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – An arrest in Tanzania has triggered a cross-border investigation culminating in the recovery of 454 kilogrammes of suspected narcotics valued at approximately Sh3.6 billion in Msambweni, Kwale County.

The National Police Service (NPS) said four suspects were arrested during the multi-agency operation, which involved Kenyan security officers and their Tanzanian counterparts.

The breakthrough began on November 5, 2026, when Tanzanian authorities intercepted and arrested a suspect allegedly found in possession of narcotic drugs.

Kenyan officers subsequently received the suspect at the Lunga Lunga–Horohoro border crossing following a formal handover by Tanzanian authorities.

According to the NPS, investigations and interrogation led officers to Shirazi Village in Kingwede Shirazi Location, Msambweni Sub-County, where they traced the premises of another suspected accomplice.

Further leads took the team to Ganja La Simba Village in Kinondo Location, where officers searched a second location and discovered packages containing 454 kilogrammes of suspected narcotics.

Police estimated the street value of the recovered consignment at Sh3.6 billion.

Two Vehicles and Motorcycle Seized

Besides the suspected drugs, officers seized two motor vehicles and a motorcycle believed to be connected to the suspected trafficking operation.

The four suspects are being held in custody as investigations continue, while the narcotics and other recovered items have been secured as exhibits.

The NPS did not identify the suspects or disclose their nationalities in its statement.

Investigation Extends Beyond Kenya’s Border

The operation highlights the role of intelligence-sharing and cooperation between neighbouring countries in investigating suspected cross-border drug trafficking.

The police service credited the operation to the multi-agency security framework and strategic direction from Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who has directed officers to intensify action against narcotics, illicit alcohol and other harmful substances.

The NPS commended Tanzanian security agencies for facilitating the handover of the initial suspect and cooperating with Kenyan officers during the investigation.

It said the operation was still ongoing and that further updates would be provided.

The service also appealed to members of the public to report suspicious activities through the nearest police station or its emergency toll-free numbers, 911 and 999.

The public can also share information through the DCI’s Fichua Kwa DCI hotline on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.
