NAIROBI, Kenya- In a game-changing partnership, Uber and Safaricom have joined forces to make using the Uber and Uber Eats apps data-free for Kenyans.
This innovative arrangement zero-rates the Uber apps, allowing users to access them without dipping into their mobile data, thanks to Safaricom footing the data bill and Uber covering costs on their end.
The initiative aims to make Uber’s services more accessible, especially in rural areas where limited data access can be a significant hurdle to customers trying to access Uber Boda.
Uber’s partnership with Safaricom means that drivers, delivery partners, riders, and Uber Eats customers can use the Uber and Uber Eats apps without worrying about data costs.
With mobile data usage still costly for many Kenyans, especially in remote regions, the move could bring Uber’s services within reach of a wider audience.
“Through this partnership with Safaricom, we can help bridge the gap in accessing data for many Kenyans, enabling them to access reliable and safe mobility,” said Imran Manji, Uber’s Head of East Africa.
For drivers, the initiative also represents a welcome reduction in expenses, helping them save on data costs as they work.
This initiative extends beyond drivers and riders, with Uber Eats customers and merchants across Kenya now able to browse and place orders on the app without using their mobile data.
Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, highlighted the move as part of Safaricom’s commitment to affordable access to essential digital services.
Since its debut in Kenya nearly a decade ago, Uber has launched over nine unique products in the country, including options tailored for the Kenyan market like Uber Boda, Uber Electric Boda, and Uber Comfort.
The partnership with Safaricom marks another milestone in Uber’s mission to meet the everyday mobility needs of Kenyans.
As smartphone users access the Uber apps data-free, this collaboration underscores how tech and telecom partnerships can reshape mobility in emerging markets.
To activate the free data, users simply need to turn off any VPNs and toggle Airplane Mode on and off to refresh their smartphone connection.
