NAIROBI, Kenya – Mercy Makini, the estranged wife of activist and Borabu parliamentary aspirant Morara Kebaso, has publicly confirmed that she walked away from their marriage months ago, rejecting claims that she remains part of his current relationship arrangements.
Mercy said she left the matrimonial home on March 2, 2026, and had deliberately kept the separation private for about six months before speaking publicly.
Her comments came after Morara addressed speculation surrounding his family and his relationship with a woman identified as Pauline. Morara had also described Mercy as the mother of his three children and asked the public to respect her.
Mercy, however, said she had not wanted their marital problems discussed publicly.
“Excuse me Morara Kebaso. I walked away privately, I thought we would keep it private!” she said in a social media response.
She added that she had chosen to remain silent for six months “out of respect for everyone involved” but decided to respond after Morara brought the matter to social media.
“However, since you have decided to bring it to social media and put it in my face, then let’s address it openly,” she said.
The latest dispute escalated after Morara publicly spoke about practising polygamy and identified Mercy as one of his wives alongside Pauline. Mercy rejected that description and said she had already moved on from the marriage.
“As for this talk about polygamy, please stop creating the impression that I am still part of your life. Polygamy is your business, not mine. I left. I moved on. I am living my life,” she said, according to reports on her response.
She further stated that she was not part of a polygamous marriage and did not want her name linked to Morara’s current relationship.
“I am not in any polygamous marriage as stated. I left the husband for whoever needed him more,” she said.
Her remarks directly challenged the public impression that she remained Morara’s first wife while he pursued another relationship.
Morara had earlier said he did not want to discuss his family on social media but felt compelled to respond to what he described as misinformation.
“The absence of factual information makes falsehood the only available information,” he said.
In her latest response, Mercy also made serious allegations about what she says led to her departure from the marriage.
She alleged that she experienced domestic violence during the relationship, including physical assaults while she was pregnant.
“I walked away because of domestic violence, including times I was physically assaulted while expectant,” she wrote.
Mercy also accused Morara of disrespecting her privately and questioned why their marital disagreements had become a public conversation.
“You’ve disrespected me in private, I thought you would just keep the disrespect private,” she said.
Her comments mark a significant escalation from her earlier September 4 response, when she initially focused on the decision to take their private family issues to social media. At the time, she said she had attempted to remain “the bigger person” and keep the matter private.
The couple’s three children have also become central to the public disagreement. Mercy questioned Morara’s decision to publicly refer to their children, arguing that he did not have sufficient knowledge of their day-to-day welfare during the period she says they had been separated.
“Where do you get the moral authority to mention kids that you have no idea what they’ve been eating for the last 6 months?” she asked.
Morara strongly disputed any suggestion that he had neglected his children.
He said he had attended every parents’ meeting at the kids’ since the children enrolled and claimed he sometimes travelled about 400 kilometres overnight to be present at school the following morning.
He also described attempts to reconcile with Mercy after she left. According to his account, he travelled to her parents’ home in Bobasi seeking a family meeting but was instead served with court papers.
Mercy also pushed back against reports suggesting that she initiated the legal battle between the couple. She said Morara filed the case and that she only responded through the appropriate legal channels.
“For the record, Kebaso sued me, and I only responded. I have documents to prove it should the conversation become necessary,” she said, according to reports quoting her response.
She also urged Morara to address his own public image without involving her.
“Clean your name without dragging mine into it,” she said.
The dispute has unfolded publicly after months of silence, with both parties presenting different accounts of the circumstances surrounding their separation and their roles in raising their children.
