Gen Z Couple Turns Nairobi CBD Into Surprise Wedding Venue

NAIROBI, Kenya — A Gen Z couple turned heads in Nairobi’s Central Business District after choosing the Kenya National Archives as the backdrop for what appeared to be an unconventional wedding ceremony.

The couple, identified only by their first names as Abigael and Kiragu, exchanged vows at the busy CBD location, drawing hundreds of curious strangers, shoppers and passers-by who quickly became an impromptu wedding audience.

There was no conventional wedding venue or carefully selected guest list.

Instead, the busy streets provided the setting as onlookers gathered around the couple, cheering and recording the proceedings on their phones.

Abigael stood out in a white wedding gown and carefully done makeup, while Kiragu appeared dressed for the occasion.

Proposal Moment Draws Cheers

One of the moments that attracted the biggest reaction from the crowd came when Kiragu went down on one knee and produced a ring for Abigael.

He placed the ring on her finger as the gathered crowd cheered, turning an ordinary section of the CBD into a temporary celebration venue.

At first, some onlookers appeared to believe the couple was filming a skit, movie or social media production.

But as the proceedings continued, it became apparent to those gathered that the couple was celebrating what appeared to be their wedding.

Muthoni Maina, who witnessed the ceremony, said she initially thought the couple was shooting a movie.

“I thought they were shooting a movie,” she said.

The unusual ceremony attracted more attention as pedestrians stopped to watch, take photographs and record videos of the couple.

Archives Has Hosted Another Public Wedding

The latest ceremony is not the first time the Kenya National Archives has become the setting for a highly publicised Gen Z wedding.

In August 2024, Tony Sherman and Kendi held a public wedding at the same Nairobi CBD location after meeting during the anti-government protests.

Their wedding attracted significant attention after they exchanged vows surrounded by members of the public.

The latest ceremony has similarly sparked curiosity over the couple’s decision to celebrate their union in one of Nairobi’s busiest public spaces.

Questions Remain Over Ceremony

While the public celebration attracted cheers and goodwill from onlookers, questions remain about the formal status of the ceremony.

It was not immediately clear who officiated the proceedings, whether a member of the clergy was involved or whether the ceremony was formally registered as a marriage.

For many of those who witnessed it, however, the unexpected celebration provided a memorable interruption to an otherwise ordinary day in Nairobi’s CBD.
