Kindiki Launches Sh293 Million Irrigation Project To Benefit 1,500 Murang’a Households

Date:

MURANG’A, Kenya – Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has launched a Sh293 million irrigation project in Kinyona-Karinga, Kigumo Constituency, Murang’a County, targeting 1,500 households and 750 acres of farmland.

The Kinyona-Karinga Irrigation Project is expected to support year-round farming of high-value crops, including vegetables, avocados, bananas, tomatoes and French beans, in a move aimed at strengthening food security and increasing farmers’ incomes.

Kindiki announced the project’s launch on Friday, October 9, 2026, saying irrigation was key to creating jobs, boosting agricultural productivity and accelerating economic development.

The project is expected to raise annual farm incomes to an average of Sh250,000 per acre once it is completed.

1,500 Households To Benefit From Year-Round Farming

The irrigation scheme will provide farmers with a more reliable water supply, reducing their dependence on rainfall and enabling them to cultivate crops throughout the year.

The planned 750 acres of irrigated farmland will support the production of high-value crops that can provide farmers with additional income opportunities.

The project is also expected to contribute to local employment through agricultural production and related economic activities.

Kindiki said irrigation remained an important tool for improving food security while helping farmers increase earnings and support broader economic growth.

Wahome, MPs Attend Project Launch

The Deputy President was accompanied by Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina and nominated MP Sabina Chege.

Others present included Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, nominated Senator Veronica Maina, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, members of the county assembly, grassroots leaders and officials from the National Irrigation Authority.

The launch forms part of efforts to expand irrigation infrastructure and improve agricultural production in the country.
