Prof Bitange Ndemo Appointed University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor

NAIROBI, Kenya – Prof. Elijah Bitange Ndemo has officially been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, marking a significant step in the leadership of the prestigious institution.

His appointment follows the conclusion of Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson’s tenure as the Acting Vice Chancellor.

In a letter from the University Council Chair, Prof. Amkowa Andngwe, dated May 5, 2025, Prof. Ndemo, currently Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium, will assume his new role after completing his diplomatic assignment and returning to Kenya.

In the interim, Prof. Francis Jackim Mulaa, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, has been appointed to act as the Vice Chancellor for a six-month period, until Prof. Ndemo formally takes office.

The appointment of Prof. Ndemo as Vice Chancellor comes at a critical time for the university, with ongoing efforts to strengthen academic programs and foster innovation.

His leadership is expected to contribute significantly to advancing the university’s mission and vision as it continues to evolve as a center of academic excellence.

Prof. Ndemo, a respected academic and public figure, will be expected to lead the university with a focus on enhancing its global impact, academic rigor, and research capacity.
