NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto, accompanied by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has officially awarded a charter to Uzima University, a specialized medical institution in Kisumu.
The event, held at State House Nairobi, also saw the presence of Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, and the university’s founder, Archbishop Emeritus Zacchaeus Okoth.
In his remarks, President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to transformative reforms in the education sector.
He highlighted the pursuit of bold, creative, and targeted initiatives aimed at expanding access to education, reforming curricula, addressing funding challenges, improving infrastructure, and enhancing training and research quality.

Uzima University, founded in 2012 by Archbishop Emeritus Zacchaeus Okoth, is Kenya’s only institution dedicated solely to health sciences.
Initially focusing on medical training, the university has since expanded its academic offerings to include degrees in Microbiology and Clinical Medicine, with a mission to address the health needs of the Great Lakes region and beyond.
The university’s new charter solidifies its role in shaping the future of medical education and research in Kenya, contributing to the growth of skilled healthcare professionals in the region.
