NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyan content creator and actor Alex Mathenge has announced his decision to quit social media, saying he wants to leave the digital space and pursue a more conventional life away from the public spotlight.
Mathenge made the announcement on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, through his Instagram Stories, where he also revealed plans to sell his social media pages to an interested individual or company.
The creator, known for his comedy and acting content, said he had reached a point where he wanted a simpler routine and a normal job rather than continuing with life as a public figure.
“I just want to be in a normal job like anyone else, behind a desk and be happy in the evening,” Mathenge said.
His announcement marks a significant turn for a creator whose career has been closely associated with online entertainment. Mathenge previously left a decade-long radio career to pursue content creation at a time when Kenya’s digital entertainment industry was still developing. In 2021, he said leaving employment to focus on online content had been a risk, although he had already started earning money through YouTube.
Mathenge also gave an unusually direct explanation for his decision to leave social media, attributing it partly to his experiences with women.
“I am quitting social media because of WOMEN!” he wrote in one of his posts.
He later added: “Women brought me down, I dont want social media anymore!”
Mathenge did not provide further details about the specific experiences he was referring to, but he presented them as part of the reasons behind his decision to walk away from content creation. His comments came alongside his explanation that he now wants a quieter and more ordinary lifestyle.
Anticipating questions about his wellbeing, Mathenge insisted that his decision was not the result of being in a poor mental state.
“For those asking, I am making this decision while at my best mental capacity!” he wrote.
He also disclosed that he has been sober for 20 months, describing the period as a positive chapter in his life.
“I am very sober! This is the second year of being sober! 20 months of sobriety and loving it,” Mathenge said.
He added: “A lot has changed guys.”
He said he plans to sell his established digital platforms to an interested person or company.
“In that regard, I am selling all my social pages to an interested person or company,” he announced.
The pages he mentioned include his Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube accounts.
The comedian left Radio Maisha in 2019 after about a decade in the media industry to concentrate on his online content business.
At the time, he acknowledged that leaving employment was a gamble because the future of digital content was uncertain. However, he had already begun earning from YouTube and believed the industry had room for growth.
Mathenge has also built a distinctive identity around comedy skits, including his police officer character, which became closely associated with his online work.
