Yvonne Okwara has left Citizen TV after eight years at the station, signing off during her final broadcast on Tuesday, October 27.
Citizen TV shared a clip of the presenter’s farewell under the caption “Yvonne Okwara Signs Off”.
In her closing remarks, Okwara told viewers she was moving on to a new chapter.
“So, I am not done building. I’m simply moving to build something else,” she said.
She urged viewers to keep asking questions, demand better and hold those in power to account.
Okwara did not announce her next role during the sign-off.
Her departure brings to an end a period in which she became one of Citizen TV’s most recognisable anchors and presenters of current affairs programmes.
From KTN to Citizen TV
Okwara joined Citizen TV in May 2018 after leaving KTN News.
She had previously worked in radio and television, including at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, Nation Media Group, QFM and NTV.
At Citizen TV, she anchored prime-time bulletins and became known to audiences through programmes including News Gang and The Explainer.
In December 2021, she also took on the role of Business Editor, leading the station’s business desk while continuing to present news.
In 2023, Citizen TV introduced The Explainer with Yvonne Okwara as a standalone Tuesday-night programme.
The show focused on unpacking major news events and explaining their implications for viewers.
The station’s editorial director at the time described Okwara as an accountability-focused journalist with a record in public-interest reporting.
Her departure closes a significant chapter in a media career that spans nearly two decades.
Okwara began in broadcasting at a young age, including presenting a children’s programme at KBC, before moving through radio production, television news and editorial leadership.
Her farewell message centred on the role she believes audiences and journalists play in public life, asking questions, expecting better and keeping those in power accountable.
