NAIROBI, Kenya — Riara University has launched an internal review following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing several women confronting and physically assaulting another woman in a washroom.

The university said some of the individuals depicted in the footage have reportedly been identified as its students.

In a statement issued on Friday, October 2, the institution said it had become aware of reports linking some of those shown in the video to Riara University.

“It has come to our attention that some of the individuals depicted in the video are reportedly students at Riara University,” the university said.

University Condemns Alleged Assault

Riara University said it “unequivocally condemns” violence, intimidation, bullying, harassment and misconduct, regardless of where such conduct occurs.

The institution noted that although the alleged incident took place off campus, the reported conduct would contravene its institutional values and Student Code of Conduct.

“While the alleged event occurred off-campus, such behaviour directly contradicts our institutional values and our code of conduct for students,” the university stated.

The footage circulating online appears to show several young women inside what appears to be a washroom, with one woman confronting another before the encounter becomes physical.

One woman is seen holding the other around the neck area and pushing her towards a wall, while the woman being confronted appears to attempt to move away.

Two other women are also visible in the footage, with one appearing to cover her mouth as the confrontation unfolds.

Identities And Circumstances Unclear

Details about what happened before the recording began, including what may have led to the confrontation, remain unclear.

The identities of the people shown in the footage have also not been independently established.

The video has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with users calling for action and accountability over the alleged incident.

Riara University said its leadership had commenced an internal review in line with its Student Code of Conduct and institutional policies.

The university also said it would cooperate with investigative authorities as inquiries into the matter continue.

“The University leadership has initiated an internal review of the matter in accordance with our Student Code of Conduct and institutional policies, and we are committed to cooperation with investigative authorities,” the institution stated.
