Jay-Z Confirmed for Super Bowl Halftime Show Performance

Rapper Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show on February 14, 2027, following nearly a week of speculation that he had selected himself for the performance after years of helping the National Football League (NFL) choose its biggest musical acts.

The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation confirmed the booking on Monday, October 26, during the Dallas Cowboys’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Apple Music announced the news through a promotional video shared on social media, accompanied by the caption, “GOAT’s out of the bag.” The campaign played on the phrase “Greatest of All Time,” a nickname frequently associated with the hip-hop mogul.

The announcement ended days of uncertainty following a report by Puck’s Dave Brooks on October 20 that Jay-Z had chosen himself to headline the February 2027 event.

The performance will take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, marking the rapper’s first Super Bowl halftime appearance as a headline performer.

Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, acknowledged the milestone in a statement accompanying the announcement.

“From ‘Reasonable Doubt’ to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey,” he said.

“Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world’s biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true.

The confirmation followed a report that first brought Jay-Z’s possible appearance into the spotlight.

On October 20, Puck reported that the rapper had selected himself for the 2027 halftime show after considering other candidates, including pop stars Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber.

The publication cited multiple unnamed sources familiar with the selection process.

The report attracted attention because Jay-Z occupies an influential position in the NFL’s entertainment programme through Roc Nation, his entertainment company. Roc Nation has partnered with the league since 2019 to help select artists and produce the halftime show.

Jay-Z had been celebrating the anniversaries of two landmark albums, Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint, through high-profile performances.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell welcomed the rapper’s decision to perform after years of working with him behind the scenes.

“For several years, we’ve had the privilege of working closely with Jay-Z and Roc Nation, and I’ve seen the extraordinary impact he has had on the Super Bowl Halftime Show,” Goodell said in a statement.

“When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request: that Jay-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him,” he added.

Goodell’s remarks highlighted the evolution of the partnership, which has helped bring performers including Rihanna, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny to the Super Bowl stage.

Jay-Z will now headline the event he has helped shape since Roc Nation entered the NFL partnership in 2019.

The league renewed its agreement with Roc Nation in 2024, extending the company’s involvement in its live music entertainment strategy.

The announcement also revived attention to comments Jay-Z made about the possibility of headlining the halftime show himself.

In a January 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, the rapper discussed why he had not selected himself for the performance.

“I thought it would be selfish to pick myself too early,” he said. “Maybe one year.”

The remarks came as Roc Nation continued to influence the selection of halftime performers, with Jay-Z remaining behind the scenes.

The rapper enters the performance with a catalogue spanning three decades, including songs such as 99 Problems, Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) and Empire State of Mind, his collaboration with Alicia Keys.

He released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, in 1996 and later established himself as a prominent figure in music, business and entertainment.

Jay-Z has won 25 Grammy Awards and received 89 nominations, according to the Associated Press.

The announcement has prompted fresh interest in the artists who could join Jay-Z on stage.

Beyoncé, his wife, is likely to attract attention because of their musical collaborations and her previous Super Bowl appearances. Rihanna, whom Jay-Z signed early in her career, is another potential subject of speculation given their professional relationship.

However, neither artist has been confirmed as a guest performer, and the organisers have not announced the setlist.

Super Bowl LXI will take place on Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium.
