Albert Otieno Ojwang’s Final Journey: Family of Slain Influencer Discloses His Burial Date

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The family of slain teacher-cum influencer who died in custody, Albert Otieno Ojwang’s now says that it will lay him to rest on Friday, July 4, 2025, at his Kakoth home in Homa Bay County.

The announcement was made by John Okwanyo, the burial committee chairperson, when he appeared on the Obinna TV Show on the evening of Monday, June 23, 2025, alongside Kenneth Ouma (spokesperson) and Hanifa Adan (Lead Planner for Requiem Mass and Burial).

Already, construction of a two-bedroom house for the parents of the late teacher and social media influencer at their home in Nyawango Village, Homa Bay County are ongoing.

According to the family, the house is expected to be completed before his burial.

How Albert Ojwang’s family had budgeted for his burial

Appearing on the online TV show, Okwanyo disclosed that the family had a budget for refreshments and everything, including the dais.

“It was a modest budget, and we were thinking about having 3,000 people attend the burial who might have gotten the refreshments at home. When you look at 3,000 people and see the nature of this funeral, it may be even more, but 3,000 people’s refreshments at home, we had approximated at around Sh4.5 million,” said Okwanyo.

So, Okwanyo indicated that they have now been forced to reduce the budget even further because of a lack of funds.

“You can now even do projecting and see that it might go down, but the people who will be catered for are fewer. If you use 3,000 people as a figure and include the tents and all the other things like the decorations, and he rest is almost Sh4.5 million,” added Okwanyo.

The trio also revealed how the money, raised through Eric Omondi’s Sisi kwa Sisi initiative, was withdrawn from Albert’s father, Meshack Ojwang’s M-Pesa account, without consent or explanation.

“All the money got lost; the only money we got here was Sh3,000. The moment we changed the SIM card, someone sent the Sh3,000. We even tried sending the money to my account so that we could transfer, but that failed, and we had to just switch off the phone,” Ouma explained.

Hanifa stated that the SIM card had already been swapped by then.

“Later on, when we visited the Safaricom office last Friday. Before that, we even bought a phone after we thought that there might be something wrong with his phone. So, when we tried to put the SIM card in the new phone, it could not pick up the network. That is when we went to the Safaricom office for this to be sorted out,” added Ouma.

How Albert Ojwang’s father, Meshack, was conned

Ouma further said that when they went to the Safaricom office, they realised that someone had done a SIM swap.

“So, what they explained to us was that either somebody did a SIM swap or downloaded the Safaricom App. That was somebody who was either closer to where we were, and this person was making the transactions on that phone,” Ouma said.

At that moment, Ouma said that Albert’s father didn’t have his national ID.

“But when he got it, we did a SIM card replacement, and they stopped the illegal transaction on that line, and of course, we have a fraud investigation that is going on,” said Ouma.
