NAIROBI, Kenya- Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina has launched a scathing attack on Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, accusing him of political hypocrisy and urging him to abandon his newly launched party and join former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
The outspoken lawmaker claimed Nyoro remained silent when the former Deputy President was impeached and is now attempting to use Gachagua’s political influence to popularise his own political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a lengthy Facebook post, the Muranga Woman Representative argued that Nyoro had failed to stand with Gachagua during one of the most defining moments in the region’s politics.
“Truth be told, Ndindi Nyoro, through some friends, began fighting Rigathi Gachagua and saying he was unfit to hold the office of Deputy President in 2027,” Maina said.
She alleged that Gachagua defended himself against those attacks while still serving in President William Ruto’s government, a move she claimed eventually contributed to his impeachment.
‘Nyoro Kept Quiet During Impeachment’
She accused the Kiharu MP of remaining silent throughout Gachagua’s impeachment process instead of publicly defending him or resigning from his position in protest.
According to the Murang’a Woman Representative, Nyoro continued serving as chairperson of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee until he was later removed from the powerful parliamentary position.
“When Rigathi was being impeached, Ndindi didn’t caution anybody. He just kept quiet because he was okay with any outcome,” she said.
She argued that Nyoro’s conduct during the impeachment contradicted his current public references to Gachagua as his “big brother.”
The two leaders were once considered close political allies within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), alongside President William Ruto, before political differences emerged within the ruling party.
Calls on Nyoro to Join DCP
Maina questioned why Nyoro had chosen to launch the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) instead of joining DCP, which has become Gachagua’s political home after his fallout with UDA.
She said Murang’a leaders, including Governor Irungu Kang’ata and several MPs and Members of County Assembly, had already aligned themselves with DCP.
“If he is genuine, why not join his so-called big brother and help strengthen the party?” she posed.
Maina argued that Gachagua had invested significant political capital in consolidating the Mt Kenya voting bloc and building a political brand capable of challenging President Ruto in 2027.
She insisted Nyoro should support that effort instead of creating what she described as a competing “mini umbrella.”
Mt Kenya Succession Politics Intensify
The remarks come days after Nyoro officially declared his presidential ambitions and unveiled PPK as his political vehicle for the 2027 elections.
The Kiharu MP has since embarked on a nationwide mobilisation campaign, beginning in Murang’a County.
Nyoro has maintained that his party is intended to offer Kenyans a fresh leadership alternative rather than divide the opposition vote.
His political declaration has, however, sparked criticism from leaders allied to Gachagua, who argue that Mt Kenya should rally behind a single political formation.
Maina compared Mt Kenya’s political landscape with other regions, saying opposition leaders in Ukambani had united under the Wiper Democratic Movement, while leaders in Western Kenya were working towards a common political front.
“All the opposition leaders in Eastern are united under one umbrella called Wiper. The Luhyas are trying to build their own. Why come with a mini umbrella?” she asked.
Battle for Mt Kenya Leadership
The exchange highlights the growing contest for influence in Mt Kenya as political leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gachagua’s DCP has continued attracting defectors from UDA and Jubilee, particularly in Central Kenya and Nairobi, while Nyoro is seeking to build an independent national political movement through PPK.
With both leaders targeting the Mt Kenya electorate, the rivalry is increasingly shaping the region’s succession politics and the broader opposition strategy against President Ruto in 2027.
