KAMPALA, Uganda — Presidential candidate Bobi Wine has alleged that the military and police raided his home in Magere, switching off power and disabling CCTV cameras, as helicopters hovered overhead.
Wine says he managed to escape but that his wife and other family members remain under house arrest.
In a statement, Wine described the incident as part of what he called a broader crackdown amid a nationwide internet shutdown, which he said fueled rumors that he had been abducted.
“Last night was very difficult at our home. The military and police raided us… Currently, I am not at home, although my wife and other family members remain under house arrest. I know that these criminals are looking for me everywhere, and I am trying my best to keep safe,” Wine said.
Wine also rejected the presidential election results, which he accused the Electoral Commission and military of manipulating.
“I reiterate our complete rejection of the fake results Byabakama is reading. Their results have zero backing!” he said, referring to Uganda Electoral Commission chair Simon Byabakama.

He alleged ballot stuffing, detention of leaders and polling officials, and other electoral offences, and condemned the killing of citizens attempting to peacefully protest.
“The people of Uganda have the right to protest in defence of their sovereign right to determine a government of their choice — not the kind of criminality we’re witnessing,” Wine said.
Wine claimed that NUP candidates were being targeted despite having evidence of winning in several constituencies.

“Aside from the blatant theft of the presidential election, these criminals have employed various fraudulent techniques… This is absolute madness,” he added.
Wine concluded his statement with a message of defiance: “The people of Uganda will ultimately win.”
The NUP candidate also shared photos purportedly taken during the raid and in the aftermath, emphasizing the chaos at his residence.
He is expected to lose the election to Yoweri Museveni who will now serve a 7th term.
