Cabinet Approves Dualling of Kiambu Road to Ease Nairobi Traffic

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The government has approved the dualling of the 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road in a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at easing congestion and improving mobility between Nairobi and Kiambu counties.

According to a Cabinet brief released Tuesday, the project will expand the busy Kiambu Road from a two-lane single carriageway into a modern dual highway complete with bypasses, loops, and access roads.

The corridor — which serves Muthaiga, Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town — is one of the most congested routes during rush hours.

Authorities say the upgrade will significantly cut travel time and enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

“The upgraded road will feature non-motorised transport lanes and commuter facilities to improve accessibility and safety for all users,” the Cabinet statement noted.

The project forms part of the government’s broader initiative to modernise Nairobi’s metropolitan transport network in line with Kenya Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals on sustainable infrastructure and mobility.

Once completed, the Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi dual carriageway is expected to boost economic productivity and improve the daily commuting experience for thousands of residents who rely on the route.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said the works will be undertaken under the Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) model guided by the FIDIC Silver Book, which ensures cost and time certainty by placing greater performance responsibility on the contractor.

KeNHA noted that the project will also include service lanes, six pedestrian footbridges, and non-motorised transport (NMT) facilities to enhance accessibility and safety.

The corridor will also cover adjoining spurs such as Ridgeways Road, Kiambu Road to Thika Road, and UN Avenue through Runda.

Officials say the dualling will complement other major road projects around the capital, including upgrades on the Thika Superhighway and Eastern Bypass, as part of efforts to decongest Nairobi and improve connectivity across the metropolitan region.
