NAIROBI, Kenya – Presidential aspirant and human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has been summoned to appear in court next week over a social media post accusing a police officer of corruption.
The Kibera Law Courts directed Mwangi to appear before Court No. 1 on October 16 at 9:00 am to respond to allegations arising from comments he made online on October 8. The post related to an ongoing assault case involving a police officer.
Mwangi shared the court summons publicly on Thursday, saying he was being targeted for “speaking the truth” about corruption within the police service.
“Today in court, Sergeant Osman Omar testified, claiming I called the police corrupt,” Mwangi wrote on X. “The Anti-Corruption Commission released a survey this year listing police officers as the most corrupt and unethical among all government departments. The case continues on November 20.”
Today in court, Sergeant Osman Omar testified, claiming I called the police corrupt. The Anti-Corruption Commission released a survey this year listing police officers as the most corrupt and unethical among all government departments and agencies. The case continues on 20th Nov.
The activist’s post referenced a 2025 Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) report that ranked the police among the most corrupt state institutions.
The legal dispute traces back to April 2, 2025, when Mwangi alleged that a police officer assaulted him at his Sema Ukweli offices in Nairobi’s Kilimani area during what was described as a noise complaint visit.
According to Mwangi, one officer appeared intoxicated and attacked him shortly after arriving. He said Kilimani OCS Albert Chebii later ordered that he be taken to Nairobi Hospital, where he was treated for injuries.
“I underwent X-rays and scans for possible internal injuries after being punched several times,” Mwangi recounted, adding that he reported the incident to both the police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
Mwangi further claimed that while he was abroad, the police later filed charges against him—accusing him of offensive conduct and assault—without prior notification.
The activist, who announced his 2027 presidential ambitions earlier this year, has frequently clashed with authorities over issues of police accountability and governance.
