NAIROBI, Kenya- The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced the arrest of the prime suspect in the killing of Nathan Wasama, an MP aspirant who was shot dead in Cheptais, Mt Elgon Constituency.
The suspect, identified as Oscar Koech Sakong, is being held at Sirisia Police Station as detectives continue investigations into the killing.
Wasama, a 61-year-old businessman, was shot dead at his shop in Tukut Trading Centre, Sasur Location, Cheptais Sub-County, on the night of August 8, 2026.
According to the DCI, detectives are pursuing further leads to establish the motive of the killing and apprehend other suspects believed to have been involved.
“We assure the public that all available investigative resources have been deployed to bring those responsible to justice,” the DCI said.
The arrest comes after former Deputy President and Democratic Congress Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua raised concerns over the handling of the investigation.
Gachagua had accused police of failing to act over Wasama’s killing and warned that he could lead residents in conducting a citizens’ arrest if authorities did not take action.
The DCI, however, said it would not disclose sensitive operational information while investigations are ongoing.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin said the agency would not conduct investigations through the media or compromise ongoing inquiries by releasing details that could affect the case.
“The DCI does not engage in, nor will it be drawn into, politics of division,” Amin said.
He added that suspects would only be processed in accordance with the law once investigations establish criminal culpability.
“Where investigations establish criminal culpability, the relevant suspects will be processed in accordance with the law and presented before the appropriate authorities,” he said.
The DCI has not disclosed the specific evidence linking Sakong to the killing or the suspected motive, saying investigations are still ongoing.
Detectives are expected to continue pursuing other leads as they seek to establish what led to Wasama’s shooting and identify any other people connected to the incident.
