NAIROBI, Kenya – The suspects, identified as Inspector Benjamin Ochieng and Corporal Said Bakari, were arrested on Monday, August 24, 2026, following an operation by the anti-graft agency.
According to the EACC, the officers allegedly demanded the money from a resident of Bombolulu after accusing him of illegally connecting electricity to his home.
The officers are alleged to have offered to refrain from investigating the alleged illegal connection and taking legal action against the complainant in exchange for the bribe.
Police officers arrested after Sh50,000 payment
The EACC said it launched investigations after receiving a report concerning the alleged bribery demand.
On August 24, investigators mounted an operation to establish the circumstances surrounding the demand.
During the operation, the two officers allegedly escorted the complainant to a bank along Moi Avenue to collect the money.
The officers were subsequently arrested opposite DTB Bank after allegedly receiving Sh50,000 from the complainant.
The money formed part of the alleged Sh100,000 bribe demand.
The suspects were taken to Central Police Station, where they were booked for processing.
They were later released on Sh30,000 cash bail each, pending further investigations.
EACC intensifies anti-corruption crackdown
The arrest comes as the EACC continues to target alleged bribery and abuse of office involving public officers.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to combating corruption and ensuring that public officials uphold integrity and accountability while performing their duties.
The agency has encouraged members of the public to report suspected bribery and other forms of corruption to the relevant authorities.
The allegations against the two officers remain subject to further investigation and any subsequent court process.
