NAIROBI, Kenya- DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua says he will take a 10-day break after arriving in the United States before embarking on a series of engagements with Kenyans living in the country.
Speaking at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Wednesday, August 26, shortly before departing for the US, Gachagua said he needed time to rest and reconnect with his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, after months of intensive political activity.
“I’m taking a 10-day break because I have been working very hard without taking time to rest. I want to use the break to re-energize and spend some quality time with my wife. I’ve not had an opportunity to spend some quality time with her.”
Gachagua is expected to spend roughly two months in the United States, where he will later begin a series of diaspora engagements as he continues building his political network ahead of the 2027 General Election.
His lawyers had previously indicated that he would be out of Kenya from August 26 to October 20, although the itinerary released by his Democracy for Citizens Party places the main US tour between September 4 and October 9.
According to the itinerary, Gachagua’s first major diaspora engagements will be in Spokane, Washington, from September 4 to 10. He will then travel to Portland, Oregon, followed by Kansas, Dallas, Texas, and finally Boston, Massachusetts.
The engagements are expected to target Kenyan communities across the five locations as Gachagua seeks to strengthen his political networks abroad and discuss his plans ahead of the 2027 polls.
The former deputy president had earlier said his extended stay in the US would also give him an opportunity to make important political decisions away from what he described as undue influence.
Speaking in Karatina on August 23, Gachagua said he wanted to spend time abroad interacting with Kenyans and other communities while planning his political future.
His departure comes after an intensive period of political consultations in Kenya, including meetings at his Wamunyoro home and engagements with leaders and grassroots supporters in different parts of the country.
Gachagua has also been positioning himself as part of efforts to build a united opposition capable of challenging President William Ruto in 2027.
For now, however, the DCP leader says his immediate priority is rest.
After the 10-day break with his wife, Gachagua is expected to begin his scheduled engagements with Kenyans living in the US, with the tour running into October.
