NAIROBI, Kenya- Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has urged drivers and road safety authorities to act responsibly after a crash near Mtito Andei killed 22 people.
In a condolence message on Sunday, Gachagua said the deaths were “a painful ordeal” for the country. He sent condolences to the victims’ families and wished those injured a quick recovery.
He also appealed to motorists to be cautious as the Christmas travel season approaches and rains continue.
“As the Christmas festivities draw near and our children prepare to travel home for the holidays, I urge all road users to exercise caution,” he said.
Gachagua called on authorities responsible for road safety to protect travellers on highways, adding that “no Kenyan, no human being deserves to lose a life out of negligence and recklessness.”
The crash happened at about 7am at Kanga, past Mtito Andei, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. A bus carrying passengers back to Mombasa after a church pastor’s burial in western Kenya collided with a lorry.
The National Transport and Safety Authority said preliminary reports indicated a head-on collision and that improper overtaking may have contributed. Investigations are under way to establish the cause.
The tragedy follows another fatal crash on the same highway earlier this month, when 17 people died near Salama.
