KITUI, Kenya- President William Ruto has announced new housing, student accommodation and electricity projects in Kitui County as he continued a four-day development tour of the Ukambani region.
In Kitui Central, he broke ground on a Sh200 million Kenya Medical Training College student village that is expected to house 580 students.
Ruto said the government is building hostels across Kitui to accommodate 5,000 students, with a national target of providing housing for 180,000 students at universities, technical institutions and KMTC centres.
He also launched the Sh2.56 billion Manyenyoni Affordable Housing Project in Kitui Town. The project is expected to deliver 1,030 homes within 18 months.
Ruto said the construction work would create jobs for young people and business opportunities for Jua Kali artisans supplying materials such as steel doors and windows.
The President inspected the Kwa Ngendu Affordable Housing Project, a Sh417.3 million development with 166 units.
He said it was 75 per cent complete and expected to be ready for occupation in December 2026.
Electricity and Enziu Bridge
In Mwingi Central, Ruto flagged off a Sh50 million Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project to connect 384 households.
He said a wider Sh330 million programme would bring power to 3,000 households in the constituency.
He also inspected the Sh670 million Enziu Bridge, which links Mwingi Central and Mwingi East.
Ruto said the bridge was nearing completion and would provide a safer crossing during heavy rains and floods.
“It is unfortunate that we have lost hundreds of lives at this spot,” he said, adding that the bridge would help keep communities connected to schools, hospitals and markets throughout the year.
The Ukambani tour, which began on October 24, covers Kitui, Machakos and Makueni counties.
Its programme includes housing, roads, water, electricity and education projects.
