NAIROBI, Kenya – Detectives have arrested two men in an intelligence-led operation in Nairobi after recovering a loaded Canik pistol from a house in Mowlem Estate, with investigators now examining whether the suspects could be connected to other robberies in the capital.
The operation began in Chokaa, where officers from Buruburu arrested Michael Osman Okanda over suspected involvement in robbery.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Okanda subsequently led detectives to the residence of his alleged accomplice, Brian Mbugua Ndungu, alias Mwarabu, in Baraka, Mowlem.
However, Mwarabu was not at home when officers arrived.
A search of the premises reportedly led detectives to a jacket hanging inside a wardrobe, where they discovered a Canik pistol fitted with a magazine containing 11 rounds of ammunition.
Officers also recovered assorted documents bearing details linked to the second suspect.
Crime Scene Investigation detectives were called in to document the scene and process the recovered items as exhibits.
How Detectives Tracked Down the Second Suspect
Investigators then launched efforts to establish Mwarabu’s whereabouts, with intelligence indicating that he worked as a boda boda rider in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
The suspect reportedly operated along the CBD-Dagoretti route and regularly returned to his rented house in the morning.
Detectives used the information to set up an ambush, waiting for him to return to the residence.
Their operation culminated in his arrest when he arrived on a red Boxer motorcycle bearing registration number KMHA 890H.
The motorcycle was also detained as an exhibit, with detectives suspecting it may have been used in criminal activities.
Both men were taken into custody for processing ahead of their expected arraignment.
Investigations Into Other Nairobi Robberies
Detectives are now examining the suspects’ movements and activities to determine whether they could be linked to other armed robberies and criminal incidents reported across Nairobi.
The recovery of the firearm is expected to form part of the ongoing investigations, although its origin and any possible connection to other incidents have not been established in the information released by the DCI.
The arrests come as detectives continue to pursue suspected armed criminal networks operating in different parts of the capital.
The DCI has urged members of the public to share information about criminal activity through its toll-free number, 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp line 0709 570 000, assuring informants that reports can be made anonymously.
The suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue. They are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court.
