NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi has proposed a political formula that would see Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna lead the United Opposition’s presidential ticket in the 2027 General Election.
Havi, a Democracy for the Citizens Party aspirant for the Westlands parliamentary seat, proposed that Sifuna be deputised by either Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata or Nyandarua Senator John Methu.
“This, for me, is the working formula for change of Government,” Havi said in a public statement.
Under his proposal, Jubilee Party Leader Fred Matiang’i, People’s Liberation Party Leader Martha Karua, DAP-Kenya Leader Eugene Wamalwa and other presidential aspirants would instead contest Senate seats and mobilise support for Sifuna in their respective counties.
Havi further proposed that DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka serve as “supreme leaders” in charge of the presidential campaign and the government that would be formed should the opposition win power.
There is, however, no such position as ‘Supreme Leader’ under the constitution since the President assumes all the powers to govern the state.
Opposition unity test
The broader opposition coalition brings together leaders and parties with different regional bases and ambitions, including Gachagua, Kalonzo, Karua, Matiang’i, Wamalwa, Sifuna and Democratic Party Leader Justin Muturi.
While the leaders have repeatedly spoken about the need for unity, the question of who will carry the coalition’s presidential flag remains unresolved.
Havi’s plan seeks to turn the presidential contest into a coordinated campaign in which the other aspirants would focus on Senate races and county-level mobilisation for Sifuna.
