“Stripped of Dignity Online”: Gender Ministry Slams Viral Nairobi Club Video, Calls for Accountability

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Ministry of Gender has condemned a disturbing video circulating online showing a woman in a vulnerable and intoxicated state inside a Nairobi entertainment establishment.

Cabinet Secretary Hanna Cheptumo described the incident as a serious violation of the individual’s dignity, privacy, and bodily autonomy.

The footage, recorded by a man without the woman’s consent, shows him attempting to expose her private parts and engaging her in explicit sexual conversation.

The woman, visibly traumatised by the ordeal, addressed Kenyans and her family.

“I am sorry to Kenyans and my family,” she said after the club video went viral.

In a statement, the Ministry reaffirmed that the dignity, privacy, and bodily autonomy of every person are guaranteed under the Constitution of Kenya, and any actions undermining these rights, including through digital dissemination, are unacceptable.

“The circumstances surrounding the recording and distribution of this material raise serious concerns regarding consent, responsible conduct, and compliance with existing legal and ethical standards, particularly in environments where individuals may be vulnerable,” Cheptumo said.

The Ministry is engaging relevant government agencies to investigate the matter and ensure that appropriate legal action is taken.

Cheptumo urged the public to refrain from sharing the footage or commenting in ways that may cause further harm.

“The Government remains fully committed to the protection of human dignity and to the advancement of a society founded on respect, accountability, and the rule of law, both offline and online,” the Cabinet Secretary added.

The incident has reignited public debate on digital ethics, consent, and the protection of vulnerable individuals, particularly in entertainment and nightlife spaces where privacy breaches can have lasting consequences.

“It is deeply unfortunate that this young woman was allegedly recorded without her consent by a man who had promised to take her to the USA. Trusting him, she could not resist, only to later be exposed on social media. Marion is just 22 years old a young woman trying to live her life. She believed she had found a partner, a man she had dated for about one year,” senior Nairobi County official Geoffrey Mosiria said.

He added, “We all have children, and it is painful to witness such situations. Imagine going online as a parent, brother, or sister and finding your own sister trending illegally, her dignity stripped away for the whole world to see. The pain, shame, and trauma that the family would go through is unimaginable.”
