Government Appeals for Support as Elgeyo Marakwet Landslide Death Toll Rises to 39

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The government has appealed to Kenyans of goodwill and humanitarian partners to support victims of the devastating landslide that struck parts of Elgeyo Marakwet County on November 1, 2025, leaving at least 39 people dead and several others displaced.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed on Tuesday that nine people remain missing, while six survivors are receiving treatment in hospital.

“Search, rescue, and recovery operations are ongoing, and the Government remains dedicated to ensuring that every missing person is accounted for, and every affected family receives adequate support,” Mwaura said in a statement.

He noted that the tragedy has left hundreds of families in dire need of food, shelter, and medical assistance, urging Kenyans to come together in solidarity.

“The Government calls upon leaders, organisations, institutions, and all compassionate Kenyans to stand with the affected families. This moment calls for unity, empathy, and collective responsibility,” he said.

Mwaura announced that a national fundraising (harambee) to support resettlement and other essential family needs will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at AIC Milimani Church, Nairobi, starting at 4:00 pm.

He also assured that the government is implementing measures to restore livelihoods and strengthen community resilience in the landslide-hit regions.

“The Government reiterates its unwavering commitment to ensuring that all affected households receive adequate humanitarian assistance and long-term support,” Mwaura added.

Funeral ceremonies for the victims are expected to take place on different dates throughout November.

The landslide — triggered by heavy rainfall — is one of the deadliest disasters to hit the Rift Valley region this year, displacing dozens of households and destroying property and farmland.
