NAIROBI, Kenya – Nominated Member of Parliament Harold Kipchumba has won the Distinguished Polio Advocacy Award from the Rotary Club of World Disability Advocacy (RCWDA), in recognition of his efforts to promote polio eradication and advance the rights of persons with disabilities.
According to a statement published by the Parliament of Kenya, Kipchumba was recognised for his courage, persistence, ability to build trust and sustained commitment to service, particularly in protecting children from polio and promoting inclusion.
The award is scheduled to be formally presented on October 24, 2026, to coincide with World Polio Day, an annual global campaign that raises awareness of efforts to eradicate the disease.
Kipchumba Uses Personal Experience To Champion Inclusion
Kipchumba, who represents persons with disabilities in the National Assembly, has drawn on his personal experience with disability to advocate for marginalised communities and promote policies aimed at creating equal opportunities.
Following the announcement, the legislator said the recognition underscored the importance of community engagement and sustained advocacy in immunisation campaigns, particularly in areas where public confidence in vaccination remains a challenge.
His advocacy has focused on protecting children from polio, a preventable disease that can cause lifelong paralysis and disability.
The parliamentary statement noted that his work also highlights the connection between polio eradication and broader efforts to create inclusive communities where persons with disabilities can participate fully in social, economic and political life.
Award Highlights Fight Against Polio
Polio remains a public health concern because infection can cause permanent paralysis, particularly among children. Immunisation is central to global efforts to eliminate the disease.
Advocacy plays a role in encouraging vaccination, building public confidence and reaching communities where misinformation, limited access to health services or other barriers can affect immunisation uptake.
Kipchumba’s recognition highlights the contribution of public leaders and disability advocates to these efforts.
What Is The Rotary Club Of World Disability Advocacy?
The Rotary Club of World Disability Advocacy is an international, cause-based Rotary e-club focused on disability rights, dignity and inclusion.
Its guiding principle is that persons with disabilities should have a meaningful role in shaping decisions that affect their lives.
The club recognises individuals whose work supports the protection of children from preventable diseases while promoting the full participation of persons with disabilities in society.
Kipchumba’s award brings together the two causes at the centre of the recognition: preventing polio and advancing the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
