NAIROBI, Kenya- Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced major changes to its editorial leadership across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
The changes, which take effect immediately, were announced by Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Odundo following a review of the company’s editorial structure and business requirements.
Group Editor-in-Chief Joe Ageyo has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of NMG Uganda, where he will oversee the company’s editorial operations.
NMG operates the Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM in Uganda.
Ageyo moves to Kampala weeks after the company’s Ugandan outlets resumed operations following a 39-day shutdown.
Security personnel occupied NMG Uganda’s premises on June 28, disrupting the operations of its television, radio, print and digital platforms.
Washington Gikunju has been appointed Acting Managing Editor of NMG Uganda.
He previously served in senior editorial positions within NMG’s Kenyan operations, including Managing Editor for Planning and Content Hubs.
In Kenya, Harry Misiko has been named Acting Editor-in-Chief, placing him in charge of the group’s editorial operations in the country.
Dann Mwangi has been appointed Acting Managing Editor for Broadcast and New Media, while John Kiplagat becomes Acting Managing Editor for Publishing.
Other appointments include Justus Wanga as Acting Lead Editor for the Weekend Edition and Michael Owuor as Acting Lead Editor of the Daily Nation.
Ben Kitili will serve as Acting Lead Editor for Broadcasting, while Michael Omondi has been appointed Acting Lead Editor of the Business Daily. Alex Ndegwa becomes Editor of the Content Hub.
In Tanzania, James Smart has been appointed Acting Managing Editor for Broadcast and New Media at Mwananchi Communications Limited, NMG’s Tanzanian subsidiary.
Odundo asked staff to support the editors as they transition into their new assignments.
The leadership changes follow the recent reconstitution of NMG’s board after Taarifa Limited acquired the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development’s controlling stake in the media company.
Taarifa, which is owned by Tanzanian businessman Rostam Aziz, acquired the 54.08 per cent stake held through NPRT Holdings Africa Limited.
Six directors, including media executive Julie Gichuru, technology entrepreneur Juliana Rotich and Scangroup founder Bharat Thakrar, were subsequently appointed to the NMG board.
