NAIROBI, Kenya- Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia is being held at Kamukunji Police Station in Nairobi following his arrest by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday.
The legislator was taken into custody after leaving the Royal Media Services (RMS) headquarters, where he had spent the night following claims that detectives were waiting outside to arrest him after his appearance on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi programme.
MPs allied to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), alongside Kaguchia’s legal team, gathered at Kamukunji Police Station as they sought access to the lawmaker following his arrest.
Earlier, Kaguchia’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, demanded that the DCI disclose the MP’s whereabouts after he was reportedly moved from the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road.
“We do not know the reason. He has been arrested. His phone has been confiscated. He has not been allowed to access any member of the family or the advocates,” Njiru told journalists.
The arrest follows the circulation of a video in which Kaguchia allegedly made controversial remarks during a political gathering in Kieni Constituency, remarks that have sparked debate over alleged incitement.
Police have not publicly disclosed the specific offence for which the MP is being held or whether he will be arraigned in court.
Njiru questioned what he termed the selective application of the law, arguing that other political leaders accused of making inflammatory statements had not faced similar action.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders have continued to criticize the arrest, demanding that authorities explain the legal basis for Kaguchia’s detention and allow his lawyers and family access to him.
“The overnight harassment and early morning arrest of Hon. John Kaguchia today only strengthen the resolve of our supporters and elevate his standing within our leadership hierarchy,” DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua said.
