NAIROBI, Kenya- National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has renewed debate over the handling of campaign funds during the 2022 Azimio la Umoja presidential bid, claiming that funds meant for election agents were given to Muhoho Kenyatta, brother of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
This was after he was accused by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna of misappropriating funds meant for agents.
Junet, a key member of the Azimio campaign secretariat, said in a statement that a restricted campaign centre in Westlands, Nairobi, reportedly controlled by parties close to Uhuru, was the de facto hub for decisions on agent recruitment and payment.
“It is from this office — out of bounds for nearly all of us, including the candidate — that they claimed to handle agents’ payments and other logistics,” Junet said.
He asserted that former President Uhuru Kenyatta released funds intended for election agents to his brother, Muhoho, who then appointed an associate, Patrick Mburu, to oversee their deployment.
Junet further claimed that no agents were deployed in key regions such as Mt Kenya and Luo Nyanza, an outcome he described as contributing to campaign weaknesses.
Rebuttal from Within ODM
Junet’s assertions were swiftly challenged by Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, who described the claims as misleading.
Sifuna acknowledged that the former President was a financier of the Azimio campaign.
“The funds that we in ODM used for our campaigns largely came from former President Uhuru Kenyatta. He supported us in every possible way,” Sifuna said.
Sifuna questioned Junet’s narrative, asking when Uhuru’s support became “bad” and challenging the implication that campaign funds were mishandled.
“When you were receiving it, which portion did you fail to remit to the party and instead spend elsewhere?” he asked.
