NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged Kenyans and his supporters to exercise patience ahead of the 2027 presidential election, warning against premature announcements that could expose prospective candidates to political harassment.

In a statement, Gachagua, who is a key figure in the United Opposition politics, emphasized that the focus should be on strengthening his DCP party before naming a candidate.

“The election is still away. If we announce a presidential candidate now, he shall be harassed by Ruto. Let us build our party. Then we shall announce when the election is in a few days,” Gachagua said.

He also referenced the party’s deliberations on potential candidates, including himself, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, George Natembeya, and Oburu Odinga, who is ironically backing President Ruto’s re-election.

Reflections on Past Elections

Gachagua recalled the narrow margin of the 2022 polls, noting that the late Raila Odinga lost by slightly above 200,000 votes, and that 700,000 voters in Luo Nyanza did not turn out.

“Uhuru Kenyatta did his work. Why are you sending young boys to insult Uhuru Kenyatta? ” Gachagua said.

Gachagua has also hinted that the embattled ODM Secretary General will be kicked out of his position for opposing the broad-based government.
