NAIROBI, Kenya- Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has landed in Kisumu ahead of a two-day political tour of Migori and Homa Bay counties, declaring Luo Nyanza his “second political home” as he steps up mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“Landed in Kisumu Dala ahead of our Migori and Homa Bay tours. Luo Nyanza is my second political home,” Kalonzo said on Thursday.
The former Vice-President is leading the Wiper Patriotic Front’s Ukombozi Tour, which is expected to take him through key towns in the two counties as he seeks to build support in a region long associated with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and ODM politics.
Kalonzo’s first day is scheduled to begin in Ntimaru, Kuria, before he proceeds to Kehancha and later addresses a major public rally at Posta Grounds in Migori town.
On Friday, he is expected to visit the Tom Mboya Mausoleum before holding public meetings in Oyugis and Kendu Bay, according to the announced programme.
Push for support in Luo Nyanza
The tour places Kalonzo at the centre of growing political competition for the Luo Nyanza vote, which is expected to be influential as parties and coalitions position themselves for the next presidential election.
His declaration that the region is his second political home reflects his long-standing political association with the area and his previous working relationship with Raila, whom he supported in several presidential contests.
Kalonzo is seeking to expand his appeal beyond his traditional Ukambani support base as opposition parties continue consultations on a possible joint presidential candidate to face President William Ruto in 2027.
The Wiper leader has maintained that he will not join President Ruto’s broad-based government, despite calls from some leaders for him to work with the administration.
Instead, he has continued to present himself as a contender for the opposition ticket.
The Migori and Homa Bay visit comes days after Kalonzo’s political standing within the opposition was thrust into fresh debate following his appearance at the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement headquarters in Nairobi.
While opposition leaders have publicly backed the need for unity, they are yet to agree on a single flagbearer. Kalonzo’s tour gives him an opportunity to test his support in a region where political alliances are shifting ahead of the 2027 race.
A region in focus
Luo Nyanza has become an increasingly important political battleground as leaders allied to the broad-based government seek to consolidate support for President Ruto, while opposition figures work to retain influence in the region.
Kalonzo’s itinerary combines grassroots meetings, rallies and a visit to the Tom Mboya Mausoleum, a symbolic stop likely to reinforce his message of political cooperation, liberation and national unity.
His reception in Migori and Homa Bay will be closely watched for signs of how voters in the former ODM stronghold are responding to the changing political landscape.
The Wiper leader is expected to use the engagements to sell his Ukombozi message, rally supporters and make his case for a central role in the opposition’s 2027 strategy.
