NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya has condemned escalating missile and drone attacks targeting infrastructure, civilians and religious sites in Saudi Arabia, warning that the hostilities threaten regional security and global trade.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs called for an immediate end to the attacks and expressed Kenya’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
“Attacks directed at civilians, civilian infrastructure and places of worship are contrary to international humanitarian law and threaten the regional stability and security of the Kingdom,” the ministry said.
Kenya also raised concern over hostile activities affecting maritime trade in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
The government said attacks and threats to freedom of navigation carried wider implications for regional and global economic stability as well as energy security.
It called for unobstructed maritime routes and an end to attacks targeting merchant and commercial vessels.
“Kenya remains committed to working with the international community to safeguard maritime security, protect legitimate trade and promote international peace and stability,” the ministry said.
The government also demanded full respect for international law and the implementation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions concerning Yemen and the Houthis, including obligations related to the arms embargo.
Kenya reaffirmed that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states were protected under the United Nations Charter.
It said it stood with Saudi Arabia in safeguarding its population, the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims travelling to the country.
The ministry noted that Kenyan citizens were among those living and working in Saudi Arabia and said the government remained concerned about their safety.
Kenya called on all parties involved in the hostilities to exercise restraint and take steps towards de-escalation.
It reiterated its support for a political settlement led and owned by Yemenis under the auspices of the United Nations, describing negotiations as the only lasting route to peace.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
Kenya said it would continue strengthening its longstanding diplomatic relationship, friendship and cooperation with Saudi Arabia.
