NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya and Tanzania have agreed to strengthen cooperation on consular matters following fresh concerns over the welfare of Kenyans living and working in Tanzania.
Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, on Thursday held talks with Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, in a meeting focused on the treatment and protection of Kenyan nationals in Tanzania.
Mudavadi underscored the importance of safeguarding the rights and safety of all foreign nationals, including Kenyans contributing to Tanzania’s economy through business and professional work.
He confirmed that Kenya had formally raised several incidents in which the rights of Kenyan citizens were allegedly violated and called for prompt action by Tanzanian authorities.
“We appreciate Tanzania’s assurances that all foreign residents engaged in lawful activities will continue to enjoy full protection under the law,” Mudavadi said.
Both countries agreed that any issues affecting citizens would be resolved through established diplomatic and consular channels, in line with international protocols and the East African Community (EAC) Common Market Protocol.
Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to maintaining strong bilateral ties and deepening regional integration within the EAC.
“Kenya remains committed to the enduring partnership with Tanzania and to advancing the East African integration agenda,” he added.
The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs said it continues to work closely with the Kenyan High Commission in Dar es Salaam to support citizens living in Tanzania and provide necessary consular services.
