“Watadhani Ni AI”: Governor Wamatangi’s 512 ECDE Centres Spark Online Buzz

Date:

KIAMBU, Kenya — Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has showcased 512 newly completed Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres built under a uniform model, drawing widespread attention online, with some Kenyans joking that the images looked “too perfect to be real.”

In a post shared on Monday, January 12, Governor Wamatangi said the centres were completed over a three-year period as part of a deliberate plan to transform early learning across the county.

Each ECDE facility follows an identical design and features modern PP1 and PP2 classrooms, a centrally placed administrative office, ablution blocks, and child-friendly play areas equipped with swings, tunnels and sandpits — a standard that rivals private academies.

Kiambu County has 524 primary schools, and the governor said the administration is now racing against time to overhaul nursery schools in all of them by June this year.

“Our goal is to ensure that every child in Kiambu begins their education journey in a safe, dignified and state-of-the-art learning environment,” Wamatangi said.

The unveiling sparked lively reactions on social media, with users praising the scale and consistency of the project.

“Other governors think this is AI… Well done! The bar has been set,” wrote one user, while another described the investment as “a sure bet for the future” and predicted it would resonate strongly with voters.

The ECDE infrastructure push comes just days after the county rolled out another major education initiative.

On January 6, the Kiambu County Government began distributing free learning materials to more than 40,000 ECDE learners across all 524 centres in the county’s 60 wards.

The supplies include exercise books, pencils with erasers, child-friendly desks and chairs, and other age-appropriate instructional materials.

Governor Wamatangi said the move was aimed at promoting equity in education by ensuring that children from all backgrounds have access to quality learning tools.

The materials distribution complements ongoing investments in ECDE infrastructure, school feeding programmes, new uniforms and continuous professional development for tutors — part of a broader strategy to deliver a holistic and engaging learning experience for young learners.
