MERU, Kenya – Deputy President Kithure Kindiki says he will remain focused on delivering development projects and will not be drawn into political attacks as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kindiki said his priority was to work with President William Ruto to complete ongoing projects and initiate new ones across the country, arguing that Kenyans were more interested in roads, markets, water and healthcare than political rhetoric.
“Those we are competing with only know how to insult and come up with slogans. I am not going to engage them because it is not what Kenyans want. They want roads, modern markets, water and better hospitals and this is what we are focused on,” Kindiki said.
He spoke on Thursday, September 17, during an inspection of development projects in Igembe South Constituency, Meru County.
Kindiki says he has forgiven critics
The Deputy President also said he had forgiven local leaders whom he accused of repeatedly insulting him and the President.
“They are insulting the President and insulting me. I have forgiven them unconditionally. They are my brothers and I will not insult them. I remain focused on serving the people of Meru and the people of Kenya,” he said.
Kindiki said he would instead devote his time to accelerating projects that are already under construction while supporting the launch of new ones.
“I will work hard and I will account for my time in office. We still have more roads to build, more markets to complete and other projects we are keen to finish,” he said.
Nyambene hospital upgrade
Among the projects inspected by Kindiki was the upgrade of Nyambene Level Four Hospital to a Level Five facility at a reported cost of Sh100 million.
He also inspected the Sh450 million Maua Modern Market, whose construction is nearing completion.
Kindiki directed contractors to accelerate the works to enable residents to begin using the facilities.
Sh1 billion Meru hospital upgrade
Other projects highlighted during the tour include the planned upgrade of Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital to a Level Six facility at a reported cost of Sh1 billion.
The county is also implementing a programme to construct 21 modern markets in towns including Kangeta, Laare, Mutuati, Mikinduri, Timau and Kianjai.
The Gakoromone Modern Market in Meru town has been allocated Sh1 billion and is expected by the government to become one of the country’s largest markets.
Sh39 billion allocated for roads
Kindiki said Meru County had received Sh39 billion for road projects, in addition to Sh3.7 billion allocated for link roads within Meru town.
He said stalled road projects had been revived while new roads had also been commissioned under the government’s road development programme.
The Sh500 million Meru County Aggregation and Industrial Park is also nearing completion and is expected to be officially opened in the coming weeks.
Maua Stadium project set to resume
Kindiki said construction of Maua Stadium would begin after delays linked to land ownership disputes.
The project has already been allocated Sh300 million, according to the Deputy President.
He also directed contractors working on the various projects to provide more employment opportunities for young people from the area.
Kindiki challenges political rivals
Kindiki also challenged political opponents to account for their records in government as the country approaches the next general election.
“They should be ready to tell the people what they did for them when they were in power. We have a scorecard to present to them so they should be ready with theirs,” he said.
Other reports on the Meru tour said Kindiki urged political competitors to focus on their programmes and records rather than personal attacks.
His remarks come amid increased political activity ahead of the 2027 election, with leaders from both the government and opposition camps holding meetings and advancing competing political messages.
