MERU, Kenya – A multi-agency security team has recovered 610 litres of illicit alcohol and arrested one suspect during an operation targeting illegal brewing in Igembe Central, Meru County.
The operation was conducted in Irindie Village, where officers raided three homesteads suspected of being involved in the production of illicit brew.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers recovered 600 litres of a locally brewed alcoholic drink known as “Muna” and 10 litres of chang’aa.
One suspect was arrested during the operation and is expected to face charges related to the production and distribution of illicit alcohol.
Nationwide Crackdown On Illicit Alcohol
The Meru operation is part of ongoing multi-agency efforts by the NPS and other government agencies to curb the production, distribution and consumption of illicit alcohol across the country.
Authorities have intensified operations targeting manufacturers, distributors and retailers of illegal alcoholic drinks.
Since December 2025, more than 2.8 million litres of illicit alcohol have been seized in operations conducted across the country.
The crackdown has also resulted in the arrest of more than 900 suspects, including people accused of manufacturing, distributing and selling illicit alcoholic drinks.
The NPS has continued to urge members of the public to report premises suspected of engaging in illegal alcohol production and distribution as authorities step up efforts to address the trade.
