Nation Media Group Resumes Uganda Operations After One-Month Shutdown

Date:

KAMPALA, Uganda- Nation Media Group (NMG) has resumed operations in Uganda, exactly one month after its broadcast platforms were shut down following an order linked to remarks by Uganda’s military chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The media company announced the return of its Ugandan operations, pledging to continue serving audiences through responsible journalism while upholding professional media standards.

NMG said its return followed engagements with relevant authorities and reaffirmed its commitment to accurate, balanced and responsible reporting.

“We remain committed to practising responsible journalism that informs, educates and empowers our audiences while contributing positively to society,” the company said.

The shutdown occurred after General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who serves as Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), accused Nation Media Group platforms of unfair reporting and ordered their closure.

The directive affected NMG’s Ugandan operations, including Nation Media Group platforms, with authorities citing concerns over content published by the media house.

The closure triggered debate among media freedom advocates, who raised concerns over press freedom and the independence of news organisations in Uganda.

Uganda’s media environment has faced increased scrutiny in recent years, with journalists and media houses often raising concerns about restrictions, regulatory pressure and political interference.

NMG, East Africa’s largest independent media organisation, operates several platforms across the region, including newspapers, television, radio and digital products.

The company said it would continue engaging stakeholders while maintaining its editorial values and serving the Ugandan audience.
