NAIROBI, Kenya – Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has appointed Engineer Angela Wanjira as the Acting Director General of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), following the exit of George Njao, who has completed his two constitutional terms in office.
According to a memo issued by NTSA Board Chairman Khatib Mwashetani, Eng. Wanjira will serve in an acting capacity for three months effective November 6, 2025, as the board initiates the process of recruiting a substantive Director General.
“This is part of a planned leadership transition as the Board seeks to recruit a substantive DG,” Mwashetani stated in the memo dated November 7, 2025.
Eng. Wanjira currently serves as the Director of Motor Vehicle Inspection and Road Safety, a role in which she has been instrumental in shaping NTSA’s vehicle inspection and road safety programmes.
The board described her as a seasoned civil engineer and visionary leader with over 20 years of experience in transport planning, road safety audits, and sustainable infrastructure design and construction.
“Having held the position of Director of Motor Vehicle Inspection and Road Safety, Eng. Wanjira brings extensive experience and is well-positioned to lead NTSA during this interim period. The Board is confident in her ability to guide the Authority forward during this transition,” Mwashetani said.
He urged NTSA staff to fully support the acting DG and remain committed to the agency’s mission of promoting road safety and efficient service delivery.
Wanjira’s career spans both public and private sectors, where she has led multidisciplinary teams in implementing projects aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability in transport systems.
A registered Professional Engineer, she holds a Master of Science in Transport with Business Management from Imperial College London, and a First-Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nairobi.
Meanwhile, the NTSA board has already advertised the position of Director General in the MyGov publication, inviting qualified candidates to apply before the November 28 deadline.
Applicants must possess a master’s degree in relevant disciplines such as Engineering, Business Management, Sciences, Technology, Commerce, or Law, and have at least 15 years of experience, including five at senior management level.
George Njao was appointed NTSA Director General in November 2019, succeeding Francis Meja, and served two consecutive terms marked by major road safety campaigns and the digitization of licensing services.
