BONDO, Kenya – Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has revealed that his doctors have ordered him to observe strict bed rest and avoid public appearances for the immediate future as he continues his recovery.
In a speech delivered by Kisii Governor Simba Arati during the first anniversary memorial of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Oburu apologised for missing the commemorations.
The Siaya Senator said he was following medical advice to allow him to recover fully but reassured party members that he remained committed to ODM and its political agenda despite his absence from public events.
“While my doctors have mandated a strict regimen of bed rest and ordered zero public appearances for the immediate future to guarantee a full and swift recovery, my heart, mind and spirit are with you at Migwena Cultural Ground,” he said.
Oburu Reassures ODM Members
Oburu also sought to reassure party supporters and leaders that his absence would not disrupt ODM’s operations or its pursuit of political objectives.
He said the party’s strategic machinery remained active and functional, urging members to remain confident in its direction.
His message came as family members, political leaders and supporters gathered in Bondo to mark one year since Raila died on October 15, 2025.
The absence of the ODM leader drew attention amid growing public interest in his health after he missed several public engagements in recent days.
Ida Odinga Explains Oburu’s Absence
Raila’s widow, Ida Odinga, also apologised for Oburu’s absence, telling mourners that he was unwell and had been advised by doctors to avoid strenuous activities and crowded gatherings.
“Dr Oburu is not feeling well, but he is not very sick. He is alive, but the doctors who are looking after him,” Ida said.
Her remarks sought to reassure mourners about the senator’s condition as the family commemorated Raila’s first death anniversary.
Oburu’s announcement did not specify how long he would remain away from public events, saying only that the restrictions would apply for the immediate future.
Oburu Turns 83
The memorial coincided with Oburu’s 83rd birthday, with his son, Jaoko Oburu, marking the occasion with a tribute celebrating his father’s love, mentorship and integrity.
“May God bless you with good health, strength, and many more joyful years. We love and honour you,” Jaoko said.
Oburu’s message combined an apology for missing the memorial with a call for ODM members to remain focused on the party’s agenda as he follows his doctors’ instructions during recovery.
